Stability Areas During Quiet Standing

چکیده
The experiments performed in our laboratory revealed that able-bodied subjects use four different high-level control strategies to maintain stable quiet standing, and that there is a direct correlation between these control strategies and the position of the subject's center of pressure (COP). The overall COP area was divided into four zones: a high preference zone, a low preference zone, an undesirable zone and an unstable zone. Division of the COP surface into four distinct zones is a new concept which should enable researches designing standing prostheses to better understand the basic design requirements for such devices. Potential standing prostheses, that will be designed to provide stable and safe \hand free" quiet standing, should maintain the COP position in the high and low preference zones. A model that describes these four stability zones has been proposed.

Test-retest reliability and minimal detectable change for center of pressure measures of postural stability in elderly subjects
Abstract Background: Postural instability has been identified as a potential precursor of falls in elderly subjects. Postural stability in quiet stance is commonly assessed with center of pressure (COP) measures. The purpose of this study was to determine testretest reliability and minimal detectable change (MDC) for the center of pressure (COP) measures in the elderly subjects. Met...
متن کاملEffectiveness of Treadmill Training on Balance Control in Elderly People: A Randomized Controlled Clinical Trial
Physical exercise would improve postural stability, which is an essential factor in preventing accidental fall among the elderly population. The aim of this study is to examine the effectiveness of treadmill walking on balance improvement among the elderly people. A total of 30 community dwelling older adults with a Berg Balance Scale score of 36-48 and the ability to walk without aid were cons...
متن کاملEvaluation of Postural Stability during Quiet Standing, Step-Up and Step-Up with Lateral Perturbation in Subjects with and without Low Back Pain
The evaluation of postural stability during quiet stance, step up and step up task with perturbation using posturography could be useful in treatment and outcome monitoring in chronic low back pain rehabilitation (CLBP). The aim of this study was twofold and investigating 1) differences of postural stability measures between CLBP patients and healthy participants during above mentioned tasks. 2...

The aim of the study was to evaluate intra- and intersession test-retest reliability for the measurements of centre of pressure displacement in quiet standing and during maximal voluntary body leaning (approximate area of stability limits). 27 elderly men participated in the study (71.4±4.9 of age). Intrasession (4 measurements with two-minute breaks) and intersession (4 measurements one week a...
متن کاملDirect measurement of human ankle stiffness during quiet standing: the intrinsic mechanical stiffness is insufficient for stability.
During quiet standing the human "inverted pendulum" sways irregularly. In previous work where subjects balanced a real inverted pendulum, we investigated what contribution the intrinsic mechanical ankle stiffness makes to achieve stability. Using the results of a plausible model, we suggested that intrinsic ankle stiffness is inadequate for providing stability. Here, using a piezo-electric tran...
